Calligraphy

I have a life-long interest in lettering and am a Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (FCLAS). I use fine writing to celebrate and commemorate all manner of occasions, using fine papers, parchment, vellum and gilding techniques.

My interest in drawing adds a further dimension to my calligraphy and an architectural qualification supplements this in the production of tableaux of characterful historic buildings for presentation or record purposes.

I work directly on commissions and for exhibitions and display purposes. I have worked on books of memories for local services (e.g. the Book of Remembrance for Sedbergh School), wedding stationary and album endorsements as well as family trees, including two local genealogy commissions traced back to Alfred the Great and Thomas More.

Steeped in historical precedent, I firmly believe that calligraphy still has a place in our high-tech world. Being based in the Lake District, I also try to draw on this spectacular locality in which I live to produce work with "writing as an art form".

My "Nitroglisterine" piece has been selected for a CLAS exhibition on the London South Bank on the theme of '...all that glisters is not gold.'

I have recently been commissioned to prepare another memorial book for a military regiment to record approximately 400 names.
